Who we are.
The Hochschul-SMD Erlangen is a Christian university group (and thus one of around 80 other university groups in Germany) consisting of students from various disciplines and different universities. As a group, we want to be open to believers, seekers and doubters alike and offer space for fellowship.
The SMD (‘Studierendenmission in Deutschland’) was founded in 1949 and is an interdenominational, Germany-wide network that aims to motivate and encourage Christians at school, university and work to be credible Christians. The SMD is a member of the Evangelical Alliance.
Our university group is organised and led by students on a voluntary basis. We receive support from our regional referent.
What we believe – Christian self-image
We are united by our faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Our aim is to live our personal faith confidently in everyday life and to discover new perspectives in dialogue with Christians and fellow students. It is important to us not to impose our views on anyone. The SMD motto summarises our basic attitude: think.believe.experience..
think.
Believing and thinking are not contradictory, even if it sometimes feels that way. We therefore want to think about scientific topics from the perspective of faith. This also includes asking critical questions about faith and thinking them through.
believe.
Although we go to different churches and belong to different denominations, we are united by our understanding of Jesus Christ. We believe that he is the Son of God. We believe that a life with him is fulfilling and that he loves every person unconditionally and without measure.
experience.
God acts and works – even today! We believe that every person can experience him personally. But experiencing also refers to spending time together – we love everything that has to do with good fellowship. Laughter. Fun. Good humour.
